MANTLE

Our new apartment has a rather large, wooden mantle over an elaborate fireplace. Since the apartment is so small, I want to keep the decorations as simple as possible, but not have it look bare. In need of some inspiration, I (obvs) went to pinterest. Some looks that I like:

And I love this for Christmas:

If only we could have a fire in the fireplace...

FLAG DAY!

Happy Flag Day! I love our stars and stripes, and learned some interesting facts about the flag from the Washington Post this morning.

- Flag Day is the celebration of June 14, 1777 when Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes
- President William Taft issued an executive order in 1912 dictating the proportions for the flag and placement of the stars. Before then, these features were left up to the flagmaker, resulting in unusual star arrangements and odd proportions.
- The U.S. flag has been modified 26 times since its adoption in 1777. Today’s 50-star flag, created in 1960, has been in use the longest.
- The national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” is based on a 15-star, 15-stripe flag sewn by Mary Pickersgill for Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Vermont and Kentucky had recently been added to the original 13 states.

Check out the website for a few more facts, and find some way to bring some red, white and blue into your day!

MEMORIAL DAY

I love Memorial Day weekend. The unofficial start to summer is usually blessed with great weather, good friends, and delicious barbecues. To get into the holiday spirit, here are some patriotic porches that I wish I could lounge on all weekend long...

Have a fun and relaxing weekend!

Every year for Mother's Day, we give my mom pansies to plant in the garden. I cannot see the flower without thinking of her. Some nice shots I found, in honor of Ma...

CINCO DE(RBY) MAYO

I will unfortunately be sitting through a weekend course instead of watching the derby on Cinco de Mayo. But, if I were able to celebrate, I'd surely want to find a way to have some festive elements of both!

Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby are both associated with specific cocktails. In addition to serving both Mint Juleps and Margaritas, try making some cupcakes inspired by these drinks!

Pair a straw sombrero with your best derby sundress...

Tie a preppy ribbon around these bottle topper sombreros, and you have the perfect derby hat decorations

HAPPY LEAP DAY!

I hope you watched 30 Rock last week. If not, put on some blue and yellow and Hulu that tonight.
